4 Mistakes to Avoid When Organizing a Garage

Did you know that 50% of homeowners named the garage as the most disorganized area of their house? (Moen study) 25% of people with 2-car garages don’t park in them at all, and a third can only park one car, largely due to garage clutter. (U.S. Dept. of Energy study)

Are these stats surprising to you, or does your own garage come to mind when reading this? Garages can easily become a catch-all area, and over time items can pile up and cause a lot of clutter. But if you are ready to take back your garage space, clear the clutter, and maybe even park your car inside then this blog is for you.

We’ll cover 4 of the most common mistakes we see people make when organizing their garage so you don’t fall prey to these pitfalls.

4 Mistakes to Avoid When Organizing Your Garage

  1. Not Taking Inventory + Editing - There is little point in organizing a space without first taking inventory and deciding what to keep and get rid of. By getting rid of items that no longer serve you or you no longer want you are making space for what matters. When you know what you have you can better plan storage solutions as well to keep items organized and easy to reach.

  2. Failing to Use Wall Space - Climb the walls. The garage is the home to large items like bikes, sports equipment, and tools. These items often fall over or get in the way. Instead, get some sturdy wall hooks and utilizes wall space to store these bulky items.

  3. Wrong Storage Solutions - Items in your garage will stay organized and tidy when you utilize the correct storage bins. Depending on the items you are storing try and think about what you most often use and need to access. For instance, seasonal sportswear can be stored in tote bins with secure lids.  This keeps items safe from the elements and pests. Add a storage rack to the garage and stack totes for ease. Just be sure to store heavier bins on the bottom shelf and lighter ones towards the top.

  4. Not Using Labels - If you utilize bins and storage containers it is easy to forget what’s inside. Then you run the risk of having to open up a bunch of bins and dig through items to find what you need. Instead, add labels to the front of storage bins so you know exactly what’s inside.
